With fraternal twin sons, I always thought I was fairly knowledgeable about "everything twins" -- that is, until I read the book, One and the Same: My Life as an Identical Twin and What I've Learned About Everyone's Struggle to Be Singular. This book is a goldmine of information and insight into the twin experience, written by a woman who's an identical twin herself.
Author Abigail Pogrebin's journalistic background and impressive writing credentials serve her well in this book as she exhaustively examines the bond between twins through personal interviews, scientific studies, and her own experience as an identical twin. I was fascinated not only by Abigail's feelings toward her sister (and her sister's feelings toward her), but also by the stories of the other twins in this book. In most cases, identical twins have a deep connection that singletons will never experience.
In One and the Same, Pogrebin examines topics such as competition between twins, the public's fascination with multiples, the complications of a pregnancy with twins, twin studies, sexual orientation, the question for individualization and separation, being married to an identical twin, the death of a twin, and much more. As Pogrebin writes in the introduction, "Being an identical twin ... is intense." I found myself saying things like, "Wow, I never thought about that!" or "That would be really weird" over and over again as I read about what it's really like to live your life as part of a matched set. Many twins embrace it; others hate it. Many twins grow closer as they get older; others seek to break the bond that has almost strangled them all their lives. It's a very complex relationship that's difficult to understand, but made more clear in reading One and the Same.
My twin sons' preschool teacher once told me that my boys are the most independent twins she's ever had in her classroom. My fraternal boys are basically brothers who just happened to share a womb and a birthdate. After reading One and the Same, I am convinced that their relationship would be different if they had been identical. The big question, of course, is whether this would be the case because they share the same DNA or because their life experiences would be different as identical people. It's probably some of both, but in reading about identical twins who were raised separately, and then found to have startling similarities as adults, the strong influence of genetics cannot be denied.
One and the Same is not just for twins or parents of twins. It's a study of everyone's individuality. It looks at what makes us who we are and what shapes our identity. It's a fascinating look at the world of twinship, as well as a compelling read about the search for one's "self."

My sister has 2 year old
My sister has 2 year old identical twin girls. I actually would like to win this book for both of us. For her, to understand twins better, and for me to become as wonderful an aunt as possible to my nieces!
one and the same
As the mother of 1 year old fraternal twin boys, I am interested in the perspective of someone who grew up as a twin. I have 3 older singletons, so this is new territory for me! I'm sure it's quite significant being identical twins vs. fraternal, but I'd love to gain insight into how it is to be a twin.
Searching for a book about identical twins
Coming from a family full of multiples, I'm always searching for books and materials that assist in raising multiples. Since having identical twins, I'am really interested in the dynamic between twins so I can better understand and be prepared to raise identical twins.

My identical twin girls are
My identical twin girls are 3 1/2, and I'm just starting to deal with some of the issues in this book. It really opened my eyes to how identical twins interact with each other. My sisters are fraternal twins, and they just didn't have the connection that Abigail & her sister, Ronde & Tiki, etc. have.
One and the Same
My identical twin daughters turned one a week ago yesterday. On our daily afternoon walk today I realized that there are moments when I have forgotten that there are two children, with two perspectives on the world, with two unique spirits, riding in the stroller that I am pushing. I feel like I am pushing one daughter.
This is in such stark contrast to the way I see them the rest of the time. When people ask, "How do you tell them apart?" (a daily question). I think to myself, "How could they look alike to you?"
So, I need to know, if this struggle is going on inside me, an adult observer, what kinds of struggles might my daughters face, growing up and living in this situation.
Forget it.. Im gonna go andbuy the book..... : )
As the mother of new born
As the mother of new born identical twin boys, I am just starting to learn about raising twins. Not finding much time to read these days, but I want to put what time I have to good use and this book would definitely fit the bill!
I am interested in this
I am interested in this because I have friends who are twins.
identical boys
I have identical twin boys who will be 3 at the end of February. I am always watching them and I am so curious as to what they think about each other. This other person who looks just like me. They play so well together and at time that twin language comes out and it amazes me to see that they are they only ones who know what they are saying. I think reading a book by an author who is an identical twin would be awesome.
One in the Same
I am fascinated by this - I have identical twin girls and am also a medical student. I am interested in it from the stance of how to raise the girls - how much should I separate them, how do I give them what they each need? I am also fascinated by it from the medical stand point, how much is the genetic influence? What is how you raise them?!?
i am interested in this
i am interested in this because it seems like a fascinating subject to explore thanks
